Bicol Penafrancia Festival 2008 Schedule
The feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is celebrated on the third Saturday of September in Naga City, Bicol. The feast day is preceded by a novena, nine days of prayer, in honor of the Virgin. On the first day, the image of the Virgin, a copy of the Madonna in Peñafrancia, Spain, is brought from its shrine to the Naga Cathedral where the novena is held.
On the last day, the image is returned to her shrine following the Naga River route. The colorful evening procession is lit by thousands of candles from devotees in boats escorting the image. When the barge reaches its destination, the devotees shout "Viva la Virgen" (Long live the Virgin!) and the image is brought back in a procession to the cathedral.
According to locals, a Spanish government official from Peñafrancia, Spain, settled with his family in Cavite in 1712. One day, his daughter fell ill and the family prayed for her recovery to the famous Madonna of Peñafrancia, a picture of whom was in their possession.
When the daughter recovered, the father vowed to build a chapel in honor of Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Manila. However, since he was being detained in Nueva Caceras, he built the chapel in that city, now known as Naga, instead.

Here is this year's Penafrancia Festival Schedule. Kita-kits!

Rain Water Tanks
I'm advocating the use of Water Tanks because it's one of the best ways to save money nowadays. In fact, in Australia, their government is offering rebates ranging from 200 to $1000 if purchase and install a rain water tank for your home.
Rain water tanks can be retrofitted in your household so you can use it for toilet flushing, clothes washing and even for your hot water supply.
Why do you need to install a rainwater tank? Here are some of the benefits.
- You can enjoy the freedom to water your garden, wash the car and top up your pool at your own convenience
- You can save money by utilising Government rebate
- You can save money by reducing your consumption and dependence on town water
- You are helping to create an eco-friendly home or business
- You add value to your property

What Would You Bring If You Had To Leave Earth?
What would you bring with you to another planet if Earth was destroyed? Quite an intriguing question isn't it?
This was the question being asked when I read about Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity. The question got me thinking and you know what I'll bring?

I will bring a picture of Earth. Lots of pictures of the amazing places here on the planet. The natural wonders and the photos of its beautiful people. I'll bring an album so that I can show the next generations about our old home.
How about you? What would you bring?
If all these sounds so fatalistic. It's actually not. All this talk was inspired by the new game I'm playing called Tabula Rasa.

Go ahead and try it. It's free! If you like science fiction role playing games, then I'm very sure that you'll like this one. I signed up for Tabula Rasa a few days ago and it's been quite interesting.
I'm a computer gaming fan and I like how the game really transforms me into another world whenever I'm playing this game. It takes my mind off work and the stress I get from the daily grind and gives me satisfaction that I can live out one of my greatest fantasies, and that is to experience being in outer space, in another plant, doing something good for humanity.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up for a free account now.

Harry Tañamor Olympic Boxing Update
Harry Tañamor was eliminated in the boxing competitions in the Beijing Olympics. Indeed it's a sad day for the Philippine contingent. Harry Tanamor lost to Manyo Plange from Ghana. He was outboxed in all rounds.
Video replays show that Harry Tanamor could not defend himself against the good counter-punch left hooks from the Ghanan.
As of the moment, we still have two chances in winning an Olympic gold medal from the Taekwondo sport.

How To Become Immortal
A lot of people still believe in the existence of the fountain of youth. Of course, who wouldn't want to live forever? I guess everyone wants to be immortal. Or is it?
I've read in a magazine a few years ago that there exists only three ways to become immortal. It's either to write and publish a bestseller, to have your name become a word in the dictionary or simply, plant a tree. It's obviously a campaign for Mother Earth. :D
Personally, I believe there are more ways to become immortal nowadays. Immortal in a sense that - you are leaving your mark forever for other generations. I don't think you need to write a book or become part of the language is all you can do to leave a legacy.
You can blog and let other people read about your life. You can do something heroic that people will pass on your story to the generations to come. Or, you can simply join Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity.

I joined this online time capsule and I sent a message out to the universe. I had message id 48 and here's what I said:
"Freedom - is not the absence of barriers. It is the ability to overcome it."
I chose to give this motto because I observed that throughout the known history of man, one of the most important part of our lives is fighting for freedom. Freedom from slavery, freedom from war, financial freedom, freedom of speech and many more.
Believing that freedom will continue to become a part of the next generations - in whatever form it will be. I think that the message is truly universal.

Day 4 Update For The Philippine Olympic Team
Archery coach Jennifer Chan bit her nails as she tried to steal glances at the high-powered gallery at the Beijing Green Archery Field on Saturday afternoon.
Worried that her ward might lose concentration, she did not tell Mark Javier that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her big entourage were in the stands.
Javier, battling through the effects of diarrhea, kept his focus and easily made the middle half of the men's Fita 70-meter ranking round, setting a new Philippine record along the way.
After the 72-arrow round, Javier ranked 37th in the field of 64 archers, earning him a knockout duel with a relatively lightweight Kuo Cheng-wei of Chinese Taipei. More important, the Filipino surpassed his old record by two points with 654 on the strength of a 333 in the second 36-arrow half.
Javier, it turned out, knew that Arroyo was watching him. Interestingly, though, the wiry, 26-year-old archer from Dumaguete focused more on unfinished business.
---
The first of the Philippines’ seven aquatics bidders joins the fray at the awe-inspiring Water Cube Tuesday when balik-Olympian James Walsh competes in the heats of the men’s 200-meter butterfly looking to better the national record.
But it’s female lifter Hidilyn Diaz who will open the RP bid on the third day of the Beijing Olympics here as she gets her baptism of fire in the 58-kilogram class.
Diaz, the 17-year-old Zamboanga lass who made these Games as a wild card, sees action at 3:30 p.m. at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Aerospace gymnasium against a stellar field that includes Chinese world record-holder Chan Yanqing.
Diaz and Walsh are the only Filipino athletes vying for either a medal or qualification Tuesday.
---
Admittedly overwhelmed by top-notch competition, shotgun marksman Eric Ang wound up dead last in the tough trap qualification stage Sunday and became the first Filipino to bow out of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad here.
The 37-year-old Olympic first-timer shot dismal strings of 21 and 20 on the second day of the event for a total of 106, missing the sixth and final shoot-off berth by 13 birds.
Altogether, he went off target 19 times in the 125-bird preliminary stage.
Completely unable to climb out of the hole he dug for himself with a first-string 19 birds Saturday, the LPG distributor from Laoag City shared the basement in the 35-shooter field with Spain’s Alberto Fernandez and Bolivia’s Cesar David Menacho-Flores.
On the same day archer Mark Javier settled for 36th spot in the ranking round of the men’s FITA 70-meter event, Ang followed that tragic 19 with 24 and 22 and ranked next to last after the first three strings.
Javier and Ang were the only Filipinos from a lean squad of 15 to see action so far in the 20-day, 205-nation Olympics.
Javier, the Asian Championships gold medalist, resumes his quest on Wednesday when he battles Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Cheng-wei in one of 32 knockout matches at the Beijing Green Archery Field west of this smog-choked city.
The 5-foot-5 Silliman University alumnus needs five wins in the head-to-head matches to assure himself of the bronze medal.
Inexperience told heavily on Ang at the soggy, mist-shrouded Beijing Shooting Range north of the city as he groped for the form that gave him an impressive seventh-place finish at the World Cup in Suhl, Germany, early this year.
After letting go four clays in the fourth string, he completely wilted at the last, missing the fifth, ninth, 19th, 20th and 24th birds in the rain.
Ranked according to the last string, the Filipino came in last, seven rungs below the only other Southeast Asian in the six-squad field, Singaporean Lee Wung Yew who managed 110.
Ang turned in a performance that even failed to beat the gold-winning effort of 107 at the Thailand SEA Games last December.

He may have brought up the rear in his first Olympic foray but Eric Ang never fired blanks, metaphorically.
The Philippines’ lone shooting entry in the Games of the 29th Olympiad here emerged from the smoke of battle dead last, in a tie with two others, and shell-shocked after competing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest trap shooters.
But the chance to shoot with the best of them was something Ang said he’d always pine for as long as he doesn’t get tired cleaning his double-barreled Beretta DT10 shotgun.
The soft-spoken trap wild card noted that 75 percent of the competition in shooting’s first outdoor event had Olympics experience.
The 5-foot-4 Ang said there was no excuse of the technical sort for his poor form, but conceded he should have shot better after range minders placed leather mats on the firing bays. He said he was used to the bare, slightly slippery surface during the pre-competition.

Admittedly overwhelmed by top-notch competition, shotgun marksman Eric Ang wound up dead last in the tough trap qualification stage Sunday and became the first Filipino to bow out of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad here.

My Thoughts On The Olympic Ceremony
A lot of people were really amazed about the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies. They became spectacled with the fireworks display and became enchanted by the voice of the cute Chinese girl who sang during the ceremony.
Little did everyone know that in a few days, the Chinese community will be held under intrigue because of these unreal performances. Yes, most of the fireworks display are digital and pre-recorded and the Chinese girl's voice was not hers.
The Chinese Olympic committee defended their side but most of the press were unimpressed with their reasons. Personally, I think that it doesn't really matter. What's important is that we make every Olympic event as an opportunity to forge unity among other nations.
Let's all be forgiving of these shortcomings, they were done under the pretense of good intentions anyway. And concentrate more on how we can make this Olympic a true memorable global experience for everyone.

Remembering The Day When I Started Blogging
I can still remember the day when I started writing this blog. It was the New Year and I was feeling optimistic about the year ahead. I just finished reading the book, The Secret, and was very enthusiastic to apply the Law of Attraction into my life.
I had several reasons for starting this blog. First, was to give myself something productive to do during my spare time. I got tired of watching television and thought to myself, there could be something more than just being a couch potato every night.
Second, was to earn some extra income for myself because I've been thinking of starting my own business someday. Maybe that's why all my earnings here are going to my savings account so that I could finally begin putting up my dream business soon, which is a simple internet cafe in our neighborhood.
Lastly, I also wanted to have new friends. In a way, blogging has brought me that. It opened up a whole new world of people to me and I really appreciate the new friends I've come to know online. To my new found online friends and blogs, I thank you for giving me inspiration and for the wonderful conversations we have online.

Philippine Olympic Team Days 1 to 3
Reigning Asian archery champion Mark Javier battled through the effects of diarrhea all afternoon and wound up 36th in the ranking round of the men’s individual Fita 70-meter competition Saturday at the 29th Olympiad here.
Marksman Eric Ang virtually shot himself in the foot, however, with a dismal opening string and looked spent going into the second day of the trap competition at the Beijing Shooting Range.
The 100-lb Javier surged back with 333 points in the second 36-arrow half to pool 654 at the Beijing Green Archery Field and set up a knockout duel with Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Cheng-wei in one of 32 head-to-head matches on Wednesday.
Javier and Ang were the first of the 15 Filipinos to see action here Saturday, the Games’ first day of competition.
---
The biggest stage of his shooting career proved to be a jolt for this diminutive marksman. And Eric Ang can’t be blamed for looking shell-shocked after bungling his date with Olympic glory.
The intrepid 37-year-old trapshooter from Laoag City took himself out of contention right away, spraying errant buck shots and missing six birds in the first string of the competition at the Beijing Shooting Range here.
Then Ang came to grief. Two shots broke the stillness of Beijing’s Fragrant Hills that framed the range but Ang failed to touch the fifth clay. A rotation later, thundering two-clap echoes still got nothing for the Filipino.
Ang stared at his feet and shook his head slightly. For perhaps the longest five seconds of his life, he just stood there, not bothering to take the spent casings off the breaches of his double-barrelled Beretta DT10 gun.
Eight points behind Pellielo and the Czeck Republic’s David Kostelecky, Ang needs a miracle to vault out of a five-man tie for 29th place in a field of 35 and into the shootoffs.
---
Harry Tañamor can now heave a sigh of relief. The rest of the big guns in the light flyweight class are still feint blips on the radar.
The lone Filipino boxing hope on Friday drew a relatively untested Manyo Plange of Ghana as his first-round opponent at the Beijing Olympics here, giving his coaches wider latitude to further fine-tune his fighting form.
As expected, Harry Tañamor missed out on the three first-round byes but the selection of the Ghanian presented his handlers with a still tempting second option, according to Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philipipnes, and coach Pat Gaspi.
---
As Team Philippines’ flag-bearer during Friday night’s opening ceremonies at the awe-inspiring Bird’s Nest, the main Olympic stadium, Manny Pacquiao became the first Filipino athlete to be so honored without ever competing in the Olympics.
Pacquiao did not ask for it, though. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo asked national sports officials in Malacañang if there was a chance that professional boxing’s international superstar could carry the flag in Beijing. Not one official dared contradict her lest she reduced the government’s assistance to sports, according to a source at the Philippine Olympic Committee.
