President GMA gave each of the Philippine athletes going to the Beijing Olympics a pocket money of $1000 to encourage them to perform well in the upcoming sports event.
This is higher than the $300 given to the members of the Philippine team who competed for the Southeast Asian Games.
Aside from this, as stipulated in the Republic Act 9064. Any Olympian who gets a gold medal will receive P5 million as reward for their achievement. Silver and bronze medalists will get P3 million and P1 million respectively.
To date, there is now a total of P15 million waiting for the Filipino athlete who will bring home the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal. This is up by P4.5 million from my previous post.
In related trivia, did you know that the Philippines has been participating in the Olympics for 84 years. The first one being the 1924 Paris games. The last Olympic medal of the country came from Filipino boxer, Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco who brought home the silver in boxing during the 1996 Atlanta Oympics.
This year, the country will be participating in eight events: boxing, taekwondo, shooting, archery, diving, swimming, athletics, and weightlifting. The Philippine team is currently composed of Mark Javier (archery); Henry Dagmil and Maristella Torres (athletics); Henry Tanamor (boxing); Miguel Molina, James Walsh, Ryan Arabejo, Daniel Coakley, and Christel Simms (swimming); Rexel Ryan Fabriga and Sheila Mae Perez (diving); Tshomlee Go and Mary Antonoinette Rivero (taekwondo); Eric Ang (shooting); and Hidilyn Diaz (weightlifting).
Manny Pacquiao will carry the Philippine flag during the parade of nations.

Boracay Here I Come
I'm joining this contest over at Pinoy Parazzi and I hope I'll win that fabulous trip to Boracay. It's so easy to join and all you have to do is answer this question:
Who is your favorite female/male celebrity? Why?

My favorite celebrity is Sharon Cuneta. Simply because she has successfully continued to shine as a star through all these years. That's why she's the Megastar! She's a role model not only to her colleagues but also to all Filipinas out there.
She's truly a bituin nawalang habang-buhay may ningning.
If you want to also get the chance to go to Boracay for free, then visit the BoraTrip Take 2 contest page over at Pinoy Parazzi.

A Walk To Remember
One of my favorite movies is The Notebook. This is originally a best selling romance novel by Nicholas Sparks. It's a very touching story about dementia and the challenges it poses for the loved ones who gets to bear and endure the loss of memory of those most precious to them.
For your information, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is degenerative and terminal. Unfortunately, today’s advance research developments has not yet found a cure. It afflicts people in their later part of life, starting from the age of 65 onwards. I've read that it is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.
Anyway, have you heard about the Alzheimer's Memory Walk? This event is organized by The Alzheimer’s Association and is the country's largest awareness and fund raising campaign for this disease. It is typically a two to three mile walk that's commonly held during the weekend of Fall. Over 600 communities participate in this event and this year, they are hoping that there will be more.

Taking An Active Step Towards A Better Career
I've been working as a systems analyst for almost 8 years now and it has been a good career for me so far. My company has given me a lot of opportunities to grow and advance my skills. However, as new and fresh graduates join our IT department, I feel that I'm being left behind in terms of technical knowledge.
Although I can choose to accept this fact and allow myself to be promoted to a managerial position, with less hands-on work requirements. I don't want to be left behind by younger colleagues when it comes to systems application and deployment.
This is why I'm choosing to take an active step towards a better career in IT. Yes, I'm currently learning my options and seriously considering enrolling in a Cisco certification program.
One of the more specific training that I want to explore is the Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE)® Storage Networking Certification. One of my company's major client is the Manila Port Operations and I was one of the team members who designed their container tracking system. It was one of the best projects that I had and I'm thinking of talking to my boss if I could take on the IT management responsibilities of that project.
I'm always amazed with IT systems, particularly this one because the storage area network at the port is very extensive. It interconnects a lot of storage devices and data servers across the pier, including some in the container ships and container trucks. With this certification, I hope I can learn more on how to effectively implement, manage and troubleshoot storage area networks including LANs, MANs and WANs over Fibre Channel, iSCSI, FCIP and FICON.
With this move, I'm hoping to get promoted to a managerial or supervisory position in the company while still keeping hands-on responsibilities, which is my true love about working in IT. Yup, I really like designing and modeling different systems. If you're interested in taking an active step in your IT skills, I suggest you take a look at Cisco Learning Network and maybe find a training program appropriate for you.

Why Do Mountain Climbers Climb Mountains?
Why do mountain climbers climb mountains? Because it's there. Yes, this was the answer given to me by a friend who regularly goes on climbing expeditions in the country. He and his mountaineering club has been enjoying the great outdoors for years and I'm very close to joining them one of these days.
I asked him one time what mountain outside the country would he want to climb first. He answered that he has always dreamed of climbing Kilimanjaro. He says that it is the highest peak in Africa located in north-eastern Tanzania. This mountain has always been a favorite destination for mountain climbers and he plans to conquer this inactive stratovolcano anytime soon.
It's both interesting and exciting for me to hear all of my friend's stories and adventures. A little more nudge from him and I might give in and join him in one of his adventures. What do you think?

Well, I've been able to correctly predict this one a lot of times actually so it's not anymore a big deal. What I'm currently improving is the accuracy of the individual number predictions that I give each draw. For this week, I correctly gave two numbers, 22 and 39. I'm hoping to get three and four numbers soon.

FEU UAAP Basketball Player Was Shot
A UAAP basketball player is fighting for his life after a lone gunman shot him twice late Thursday night on July 27, 2008. Mac Baracael, 23, a junior forward of the Far Eastern University, was shot around 8:40 p.m. by an unknown assailant with a .45 pistol, near Philtrust, at the corner of Morayta and R. Papa streets.
Anton Montinola, FEU's representative to the UAAP board, said Baracael was "fighting for his life" at Mary Chiles hospital. Baracael was walking with teammates Ron Cabagnot and Robert Kave to buy food after the team's practice when he was shot.
