Hit Frequency

Numbers can be categorized into three groups:

Active numbers which are the fourteen balls with the highest number of appearance in the past draws. Lotto fans think that betting on active numbers are good because they represent the balls which are currently being favored by chance, and we know that superstition have a tendency to play a big role in our betting system.

Passive numbers are the fourteen balls with the lowest number of appearance in a given period. According to the law of averages, these numbers will have a high chance of occurring because for long spans of time, the hit frequency of all numbers will eventually even out.

Normal numbers are the fourteen balls which are neither active nor passive. It is likewise important to consider these numbers because they historically, one or two normal numbers regularly occur in winning results.

Although there is no mathematical proof to show what active, passive and normal combinations are most effective, we can study the past draws to determine what's the hit frequency composition that's more likely to occur in the next draws. The database that I'm using for the this analysis are Philippine Lotto 6/42 draws from 2006 up until the present time. That's more than two years of good historical data, don't you think?

Last Digits

This is related to the numbers group theory but this one refers to the last digit of the number.

For example, in the Philippine Lotto 6/42 winning number results for December 22, 2007:
3 - 9 - 18 - 25 - 33 - 38

The last digits of this combination are two 3's, two 8's, one 5 and one 9.

The probability theory explained here says that it is unlikely that the winning result will have four or more numbers which have the same last digits.

Number Groups

Numbers belong to the same group if their first digit is the same. Thus to illustrate fully:

Single digit number group:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Teen number group:
10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

Twenty-something number group:
20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29

Thirty-something number group:
30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39

Forty-something number group:
40, 41, 42

What's the rule with number groups? It simply states that the winning lotto result will unlikely have five or six numbers that belong to the same number group. This means that you have to spread your bets to at least three number groups to have a greater chance at winning.

Consecutive Numbers

Consecutive means to come in the natural number sequence.

32 and 33 are two consecutive numbers.

10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 are five consecutive numbers.

This probability theory is fairly easy to explain and understand.

Simply put, this rule tells that winning 6/42 lottery results will not have four or more consecutive numbers. With regards to picking your number combinations, it is important to remember this rule.

Low and High Numbers

Given a lottery game with 42 balls, the numbers from 1 through 21 are considered low numbers.

On the other hand, the numbers from 22 through 42 are considered high numbers.

More than 70% of the winning lotto numbers for the Philippine Lotto 6/42 have a mixed combination of both low and high numbers. This means that they belong to one of these categories:

2 - 4
Two low numbers and four high numbers

3 - 3
Three low numbers and three high numbers

Sum of Number Combination

The sum of number combination refers to the total when you add all the six numbers in your betting choice.

Let's take the Philippine Lotto 6/42 winning result for December 29, 2007:
8 - 19 - 27 - 31 - 34 - 39

The sum of the numbers would be 8 + 19 + 27 + 31 + 34 + 39 which is equal to 158.

Did you know that 70% of all winning numbers in the Philippine Lotto 6/42 have a sum between 99 and 159?

Our example above belongs to that statistic. So the next time you choose your numbers, try to make the sum between 99 and 159.

Odd And Even Numbers

Numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and ODD numbers.

While those ending in 2, 4, 6, 8 and 0 and EVEN numbers.

This combination is being generated by a number generator program which I made (yes I'm a software developer) and follows all the discussed probability theories that can be used to increase one's chance at winning the lotto.

Why Only The Philippine Lotto 6/42?

As you're probably wondering, why am I just posting and studying the Philippine Lotto 6/42?

Here are my reasons:

1. I'm from the Philippines. So it's only natural that I'm going to review our local lottery games.

2. Only the 6 ball lottery games give out millions of pesos. I don't want to waste my time studying the other games which will make me win only a few thousand pesos, although some of them have a higher rate of winning. These other games will be discussed in future posts hopefully.

3. Among the available 6 ball lottery games, the 6/42 has the highest probability of winning as compared to the Megalotto 6/45 and Superlotto 6/49. Common sense tells us that I don't need to prove this.

Reminders Before Playing The Lotto

I don't want to advocate financial irresponsibility so I would like to dispense some of these advise first.

1. You don't need to play every time or bet on a lot of combinations to win the lotto. Although common sense would tell us that our chances of winning are higher if we play often, the actual figure is so very close to zero such that it won't really make much of a difference. You don't believe me? Ask the closest math geek you know and have him compute the probabilities for you.

2. After accepting the previous fact, then it would be easy for you to understand that it is best that you play the lottery only when you have extra money. Don't be a fool and waste your lunch money! This is just a game, and by that I mean playing the lotto means you should be spending cash that's coming out of your entertainment budget.

3. Lastly, always have your number combinations ready before you go to the lotto outlet. I'm sorry but this is a pet peeve of mine. I just don't like the crowd of people gathered around the lottery outlet standing silently and praying to get that miraculous whisper of winning numbers. What gives, right? Just tick the Lucky Pick and let the machine listen for that voice you're trying to hear. ^_^

Why Am I Doing This?

There's popular belief that the chances of being struck by lightning is greater than winning the lottery jackpot. This is the reason why financially smart people don't advocate wasting your money on betting in games of chance.

Nevertheless, despite all these facts, a lot of people still play. Have you seen the queue in these lotto outlets? They're really long. And it's not just the common masses that's out there, I could see well-dressed corporate people who are also hoping to get a chance at living in the fast track. I'm likewise one of those people running in the rat race, and yes I belong to those thousands (or is it millions?) of people who are praying for a miracle and a chance a financial freedom.

I know what you're thinking, I maybe better off trying to save my money and investing it on an income generating asset. I'm glad to tell you that I'm also doing that.
